Medicare Q & A

Medicare Q & A

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 years of age and older, people with disabilities, and people with end-stage renal disease. Medicare helps pay for various medical services, including skilled nursing facilities.
This may cover care given in a certified skilled nursing facility if it’s medically necessary for you to have skilled nursing care (like changing sterile dressings). However, most nursing home care is custodial care, like help with bathing or dressing. Medicare doesn’t cover custodial care if that’s the only care you need.
If you have limited assets and a low income and you need help paying for nursing home or assisted living care, Medicaid might help you pay for your care. Medicaid is a joint federal and state program, and the states have some flexibility in setting the benefits they will offer and the eligibility criteria for those benefits.
